Virtual Classes and Outdoor Programs Help Seniors Stay Connected and Fit During the COVID-19 Pandemic

 

SOMERVILLE, NJ – With COVID-19 restrictions easing, safeguards have been implemented at the Somerset County-operated senior centers allowing the centers to partially open by offering outdoor activities and Zoom programsThe county’s management team is continuing to follow state-mandated public healthcare guidelines and is assessing when it will be safe to fully reopen and resume regularly scheduled onsite, indoor activities.

 

Outdoor programs feature live music events and exercise classes. Participants must preregister for classes and order their boxed lunches in advance. Outdoor programs are noted on this calendar as OUTDOOR EVENTS.

 

Classes/programs will not be open on Labor Day (Sept. 6).

 

Social Distancing

During in-person events, masks are required for those who are not fully vaccinated and are preferred when social distancing cannot be maintained.

 

Zoom Guidelines

Unless otherwise specified, residents age 60 and above can join any Zoom program listed in this schedule even if they are not a client at the center that is hosting the event. Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer and allows residents to see and hear others.

 

Zoom Activity Release Forms

Participants are required to obtain and complete an Activity Release Form from the senior center they regularly attend. After submitting the form to that center, participants will receive an email with information about all Zoom classes and programs listed in this schedule. All programs are FREE for registered members!

Sept. 2, 10:45 a.m. – “Art SmART” by historical consultant and presenter Meg Wastie. Explore well-known famous works of art and learn specific stories and surprising information about these memorable creations. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. This program is also hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 2, 11 a.m. – “Humor” by Senior Support Specialist, Crisis Counselor Samantha Malinger, Robert Wood Johnson Institute for Prevention and Recovery’s Hope and Healing Program. Join others to discuss what makes people laugh, and how laughter directly benefits one’s health. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 3, 11 a.m. – Cranium Challenge with Cate. Try solving challenging puzzles, mind-bending riddles and practice thinking on your feet when answering some brain-teasing questions. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Hillsborough.**

Sept. 7, 10:30 a.m. – “Focus on Fall Prevention, Pain Awareness and Emergency Preparedness: Jeopardy Style” by Doctor of Pharmacy, Candidate 2022 of St. John’s University of New York Michelle Chin. In recognition of Fall Prevention Month, join Michelle Chin to participate in “Jeopardy” a fun way to learn important health topics such as how medication can increase the risk of falls, how to protect oneself from falls, the risks and benefits of pain medication, how to pack if a natural disaster or national emergency arises. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 7, 11 a.m. – “Elder Abuse” by Eldercare Educator Adalin Ball, M.S.W., Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services. Learn how to identify the signs of abuse, and neglect in the elderly as well as how to get help. Participants will also find out how to protect themselves from health care fraud. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Basking Ridge.**

Sept. 8, 11 a.m. – “The Life of Albert Einstein” by Eve Mandel, Historical Society of Princeton. Examine the life of the Nobel prize-winning scientist Albert Einstein, whose name has become synonymous with genius. Learn lesser-known facts about his life, such as how his childhood fascination with a compass helped incite his interest in science, his acceptance of a job in Princeton helped him escape Nazi Germany, and how he advocated for civil rights and advanced world peace by using his status as a celebrity. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission, and is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

 

Sept. 9, 11 a.m. – T’ai Chi Chih: Joy Through Movement by Siobhan Hutchinson, Next Step Strategies, LLC. Practice T’ai Chi Chih and learn the science behind this easy-to-learn meditative exercise that has been proven to increase one’s immunity, improve the quality of sleep, and decrease the symptoms of depression. T’ai Chi Chih is a gentle, mindful, moving meditation that helps strengthen one’s balance for the prevention of falls, improves blood pressure, and provides participants with an overall sense of well-being. **This program is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

Master the art of controlling your emotions and practice increasing your awareness, developing internal strength and changing negative emotions into positive energy. Dr. Prabha Srinivas credentials include a Certification Art & Science of Brain-Based Therapy; Clinical Applications of Yogic/Body Psychotherapy (Rutgers Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology); Beck Cognitive Behavior Therapy, The American Yoga Academy (Yoga Teacher/Trainer). **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 14, 10 a.m. – “Acupuncture: Ancient Chinese Medicine (Part 3)” Justin Jaucian, M.S.T.O.M. Join Part 3 of a three-part series and learn about the importance of essential nutrition with the inclusion of herbs, plant, animal, mineral products, dietary supplements, and proper breathing when combined with the centuries-old practice of acupuncture.  An acupuncturist uses synergy when applying needles to different areas of the body, which helps promote, maintain, and assist in the restoration of  one’s emotional and physical health. Sept. 14, 3 p.m. – Virtual Bingo. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple benefits such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and helping to improve short-term memory skills. Participants can play virtually by using the gameboard on their computer screen. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

 

Sept. 15, 11 a.m. – “Keep This, Toss That” by Organizing Humorist and Bestselling Author Jamie Novak. Join Jamie Novak to hear her laugh-out-loud funny approach to decluttering without getting overwhelmed. For those who can’t open their drawers, have clutter that topples out of closets, and paperwork covering furniture, then run, don’t walk, to this comedy show where you will learn how to laugh while tackling a mess! **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

 

Sept. 15, 11 a.m. – “The Majestic Turkey Vulture” by Duke Farms Educator. Learn about the biology, ecology, and behavior of the turkey vulture (also known as the turkey buzzard or buzzard) and why these creatures receive legal protection under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Participants will learn interesting facts such as how the turkey vulture relies on eyesight and a keen sense of smell to detect its prey. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 16, 11 a.m. – “Why Do We Say That? Dog Days of Summer & Other Curious Expressions: Part 2” by Historical Consultant and Presenter Meg Wastie. Detective Michael Rosati is from the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor-Medicaid, Fraud Control Unit. **This program is hosted by the Quail Brook Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 20, 12 p.m. – “Exploring Latin American Cuisine” by Sigrid Solis, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Mark the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month with a discussion about Latin American Cuisine! In this class, Ms. Solis will discuss the ingredients used in most Latin American dishes, what nutrients these ingredients provide, and she will share recipes to try at home. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

 

Sept. 20, 2:30 p.m. – “Live Virtual Tour of the Liberty Museum.” Discover the local and national history of  the 1770s to the modern-day. Take a tour from the comfort of your own home with Liberty Hall Museum educators who will guide participants through a live virtual tour of a 50-room mansion to explore historic bedrooms, kitchens, parlors, dining rooms and so much more. Meet governors, politicians, civil war nurses, and historic preservationists. **This program is hosted by the Montgomery Senior Center.**

 

Sept. 21, 11 a.m. – “Lucille Ball” by Evan Weiner. Learn interesting facts about Lucille Ball, one of the most powerful businesswomen in Hollywood. She was told she didn’t have what it took to be an actress but proved her critics wrong when she appeared in a short film with the Three Stooges. After becoming a B-list movie star and marrying Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball’s movie career was over by the age of 35. However, after a brief but successful stint in radio, Lucille Ball was offered an opportunity on a T.V. show where her notoriety reached iconic levels. Deer are much more than road hazards and garden destroyers. In actuality, deer are one of the most interesting animals found in our backyard. **This program is hosted by the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater.**

 

Sept. 23, 11 a.m. – Painting a Landscape. Join artist Sam Matthews from Art Across Borders to learn step-by-step instructions on how to paint a colorful beach landscape using acrylics. All experience levels are welcome!  ** Supplies must be picked up from the Warrenbrook Senior Center. Participants may also use their supplies but will need bristol paper, a variety of acrylic paint colors and a paintbrush. Pre-registration is required. The class size is limited to 24 people. Sept. 27, 2:30 p.m. – Ageless Grace Fitness Program with Certified Ageless Grace Educators Denise Crowley, Allyson Toth & Roz Gerken. Exercise and activate all five functions of the brain while seated in a chair.  The Ageless Grace Fitness Program is based on the cutting-edge science of neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain and central nervous system to change functionally and structurally through a few simple exercises that will help improve one’s strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity, imagination and kinesthetic thinking. Sept. 30, 11 a.m. – “William Livingston: General, Governor, Signer of the Constitution.” Celebrate Constitution Day with the Liberty Hall Museum! Learn interesting facts about William Livingston – the man who shaped some areas of the U.S. government, such as the assumption of state debts and the Electoral College. Find out what Livingston’s role was at the Constitutional Convention and what James Madison said about Livingston. **This program is made possible by funds from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey Historical Commission and is hosted by the Warrenbrook Senior Center.**

Mondays, 10 a.m.  – Chair Yoga with ManjulaGain the benefits of practicing yoga poses from the support and safety of your favorite chair. Increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping to gain an overall sense of well-being. **The class is open to all skill levels and can be practiced while standing or sitting. Mondays, 12 p.m. – Silver Strength with Rose. Join this 45-minute exercise class, where participants will practice 20 minutes of cardio (or movement), followed by 20 minutes of toning (with or without weights), then a five-minute relaxing stretch. **This class is great for all skill levels. Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. – The Regime Workout with Allyson. Get a head-to-toe workout by using weights at intervals with stretching and aerobics. This exercise will help lubricate joints for flexibility, strengthen and stabilize muscles, increase blood circulation, support weight loss, lower the risk of falls and increase one’s ability to accomplish daily activities. Monday – Upper Body Routine, Wednesday – Mid Section Routine, Friday – Lower Body Routine. ** Class will NOT be held on Friday, Sept. 10, and Wednesday, Sept. 15. Exercises can be practiced while either standing or sitting and with or without hand weights. Fridays, 11:30 a.m. – Zumba Gold (Chair) with Laurie Fetcher. Get your blood pumping to zesty music that will inspire a hearty workout. This class is manageable for people who are age 60 and above, beginners, or others who need modification to their exercise routine. Participants will build cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the hip, leg, and arm muscles as they practice fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair.**A maximum of 25 participants is allowed in the class. Improve your heart health, reduce stress, lower the risk of depression, reduce the risk of diabetes and osteoporosis, increase body stamina, and improve metabolism, flexibility and coordination in this intense 1-hour workout session. **A maximum of 25 participants is allowed in class.**

 

(OUTDOOR EVENT) Sept. 13 & 27, 11:15 a.m. – Bereavement Support GroupShare common feelings about grief and the renewal process. The purpose of this support group is to provide participants with a safe place to grieve the death of a loved one by incorporating interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts. Doctor of Ministry, Grief Counselor and Pastoral Psychotherapist Ronald W. Kaplan will facilitate discussions.
