Somerset County-Operated Senior Centers Offer Virtual and In-Person Activities in January


SOMERVILLE, NJ – Register at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior centers and join the fun activities and programs available in January, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Managed by the county’s Office on Aging and Disability Services, the senior centers provide a wide range of programs for lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere to positively impact the overall health of aging adults. It is free to register at the county-operated senior centers.

Lunch
Invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! All county-operated senior centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Senior center clients must make reservations before 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

Closures
There will be no in-person, hybrid or virtual classes and programs on New Year’s Day observed (Jan. 2) and Martin Luther King’s Birthday (Jan. 16).

Virtual and Hybrid Programs
Hybrid programs occur simultaneously, in person with an instructor and virtually via Zoom. Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule.

Members of any senior center can attend any virtual class. Virtual classes only have room for 25 people.

Zoom is a secure, video-based, user-friendly, online platform that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet, or computer that allows residents to see and hear others. Participants can join Zoom meetings through a web browser without downloading any applications or software.

Participants need cameras (audio and video) to join virtual programs.

Take Control of Exercise – Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 a.m. Strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina in this ongoing exercise program that is presented in a video format. **There is no fee for this ongoing class. Bridge Club – Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Get intellectual and social stimulation when playing Bridge, a mentally challenging card game. Studies show when participants play Bridge regularly it can stimulate the brain to keep it alert and help memory stay active. **New members and beginners are always welcome. Mahjong Club – Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Learn to play Mahjong, an interesting game that helps keep your brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves the game and wants to meet new people and have fun. **This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.**

Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Jan. 4, 11 a.m. – “Fall and Concussion Prevention” by Debbie Aidelman, Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. Learn strategies to prevent falls and increase safety in the home and around the community. Participants will receive a safety checklist to help them identify and avoid potentially hazardous situations.

Jan. 5, 10:30 a.m. – January Trivia with Kelly. Play this fun game of January trivia to stimulate your mind while learning new facts.

Jan. 5, 12, 19 & 26, 11 a.m. – Line Dancing with David Cross. Have fun getting fit while dancing. Participants don’t need a partner, and it’s an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. Jan. 6 & 20, 11 a.m. – Bingo. Bingo is more than just a fun activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, improving concentration, honing one’s listening skills and boosting short-term memory.

Jan. 9, 11 a.m. – New Beginnings with Dave Miller and Cheryl Glover, EarthMovers Drum Collective. Learn how to hold a drum and make different tones to help soothe the mind, body, and spirit. Drumming is an age-old practice used to promote healing and incite self-expression. Participants will achieve deep relaxation, lower their blood pressure, build their communication skills, and have a holistic experience that leaves them with a sense of joy.

Jan. 10, 17, 24 & 31, 11 a.m. – “Healthy Aging” with Senior Education by Director Brenda Miller, Community in Crisis. Learn about topics such as health and wellness, medication use, stress management, depression, substance use and misuse in a seven-week wellness program that provides valuable information for adults 60 years of age or older. In the seventh, session Ms. Miller will discuss how to manage pain through alternative methods such as yoga, chiropractic care, massage and more. Attendance at all (or most) sessions is required.

Jan. 11, 11 a.m. – “What’s New in Astronomy and Space Exploration” by Paul Cirillo. Learn about human space programs, such as space stations, gateways, moon bases, trips to Mars and space tourism, developed by the United States, China, Russia, and several commercial companies.

Jan. 13, 11 a.m. – Fun, Fit, and Fabulous: Stretch and Strength with Brandywine Living. Lace-up your sneakers and let’s get moving! Learn how to improve flexibility, mobility, and stretch and strengthen your muscles. These exercises will help protect against injury while you age.

Jan. 18, 11 a.m. – “What’s Cooking by the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts.” Learn about nineteenth-century cooking techniques during a hands-on examination of cooking utensils and food-related artifacts from the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts Teaching Collection. Participants can reminisce about their favorite recipes and share memories of their favorite foods and cooking experiences.

Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m. – Brain Games with Kelly. Play various games, puzzles, and trivia that will help boost your brain’s health. Studies show that brain games may help sharpen certain thinking skills that tend to wane with age, such as processing speed, planning skills, reaction time, decision-making and short-term memory.

Jan. 23, 11 a.m. – “Cognitive Health Awareness” by Registered Occupational Therapist Giana Marucci, Kessler Rehabilitation. Learn the importance of cognitive health while playing brain games in this fun and interactive presentation.

Jan. 25, 11 a.m. – “Skin Cancer Prevention” by Community Cancer Control Specialist Shantelle James. Learn how to protect yourself from skin cancer and find out why it is important to protect your skin as you age.

(Hybrid) Gentle Aerobics with Lisa & Caitlin – Fridays, 10:30 a.m. Exercise without putting undue pressure or strain on the body. Learn movements to increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize individual muscles. Gentle aerobics can help decrease the risk of falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day activities. **This class is presented in a hybrid format via Zoom and conducted live at the center by an instructor. Exercises can be practiced while standing or sitting. The class is open to all skill levels.**

Qigong Practices with Michael – Mondays, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that teaches participants to get acquainted with their mind, body, and spirit. Beginners will learn to coordinate their breathing techniques with movements and then practice sets of exercises (similar to Tai Chi) until each movement or posture is perfected.

(NEW) Ukulele Bootcamp – Thursdays, 12:30 p.m. Learn how to start playing songs on the first day in this fun, eight-week ukulele boot easy tocamp! The Ukulele is an incredibly easy-to-learn instrument with only four strings, participants can quickly learn the chords and finger placement. Playing the ukulele can help participants improve focus, and hand-eye coordination, foster social interaction, and more. **No previous experience or musical training is necessary. (New) Project Healthy Bones – Fridays, 12:45 p.m. Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture in this peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who are either at risk for osteoporosis or have it. **The cost is $15 for the 24-week class and includes a manual. Participants will learn the science, the clinical benefits of treatment, and the types of tumors the therapy treats, such as prostate, breast, and lung cancers.

Jan. 10 & 17, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support Group. Share common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group that provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are incorporated into this group. Doctor of Ministry, Grief Counselor, and Pastoral Psychotherapist Ronald W. Jan. 12, 11 a.m. – “Passports to Penguins” by Naturalist Vanessa Darras, Somerset County Parks Commission. Travel in your minds-eye to Antarctica during a one-hour presentation where you will learn all about penguins including the different species, their habitat, what they eat, and much more.

Jan. 13, 10 – 11:15 a.m. – Free Blood Pressure Screenings, Somerset County Vo-Tech Nursing Students. Help students hone their blood-pressure-taking skills and get a free blood pressure reading. **No appointment is necessary.**

Jan. 17, 11 a.m. – “New Year, New Me” by Al Raccuia, JagOne Physical Therapy. Join fellow center members to learn how to prevent injuries while reaching your weight loss goal.
Jan. 19, 11 a.m. – Musical Thrills by Bruce Foster the Great-Grandson of America’s First Composer, Steven Foster. Enjoy this performance by Bruce Foster who has been playing and writing music for most of his life. His keyboard music can be heard on albums by KISS, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and several movie soundtracks.

Jan. 20, 11 a.m. – Games and Trivia by Raritan Valley UNICO (and Italian American Service Organization). Join fellow center members and Unico to play a variety of fun games including trivia.

Jan. 23, 11 a.m. – Chinese Lantern Craft. Create and decorate wooden lanterns to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Participants will decorate the center for the New Year Celebration on January 25.

Bingocize your brain and play this fun version of Bingo with an educational twist. The game combines exercise and facts about health and each game session lasts about 45-60 minutes. It should only be played twice a week on nonconsecutive days. Bingocize is a great way to get older adults mingling and moving. Mahjong Club – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Play this interesting game Mahjong, a tile-based game that requires skill, strategy and luck, which was invented in China and has been played throughout the world since the early 20th century.

Fit & Flex with Rose – Wednesdays, 11 a.m. Get fit while performing 20 minutes of low-impact exercise to music, use weights for 15 minutes, and then use resistance bands for 15 minutes. Perform stretching exercises with a chair and other movements while standing. The instructor encourages and supports proper breathing and proper positioning.

Beginner Ukulele Club with David – Wednesdays, 1 p.m. Start on the right note with easy-to-follow lessons. Learn how to hold, tune, and strum simple chords while learning the foundation of playing the ukulele.

Cardio Boxing – Tuesdays &Thursdays, 10 a.m. Learn this exciting exercise that is easy to follow for older adults. **This class is presented in a video format. All exercises are demonstrated while standing and sitting.**

Chair Exercise video format – Fridays, 10 a.m. Increase your strength, boost stamina and energy, and improve blood circulation, heart health, range of motion, motor skills and balance in this fun, challenging and invigorating chair-exercise class. Participants will perform a variety of exercises, including cardio, abs, core, and stretching, which can be practiced while seated in a chair. **Participants need a sturdy chair, water bottle, and hand weights or substitute the hand weights with two soup cans or two filled water bottles.**

Puzzle Club – Thursdays, 1 p.m. Strike up a conversation, make new friends, and enjoy assembling puzzles. Participants can choose from a wide variety of puzzles.

Jan. 3, 10 a.m. – “Bon Voyage: 200 Years of Luxury Travel” by Education Coordinator Hannah Gaston, The Museum at Liberty Hall. Pack your suitcase and take a vacation luxury style just like the wealthy Livingston and Kean families took between 1780 and 1950. These fabulous trips have been recreated through personal diaries, letters from family members, photographs, maps, and souvenirs bringing to life 200 years of luxury travel. Bon Voyage!

Jan. 9, 11 a.m. – “Wills and Estate Planning” by Somerset County Surrogate Bernice “Tina” Jalloh, Esq. Learn about estate planning; wills; the probate and estate administration process, such as how to organize and prepare for estate planning; the benefits of having a will; and what are the responsibilities of the executor and administrator. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.

Jan. 12, 11 a.m. – “Be Red Cross Ready: Fire Safety” by Disaster Program Specialist Allie Calascibetta, American Red Cross. Learn what to do before, during and after a fire. Get tips and information about how to keep you and your family safe from home fires.

Jan. 23, 11 a.m. – “Hereditary Cancers” with Community Cancer Control Specialist Ashley Purper, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Learn how and why cancer forms in cells, what methods are used to identify the risk for cancer, information about genetic testing and genetic risk assessment, as well as what hereditary and lifestyle risk factors can increase a person’s risk for developing cancer.

Jan. 24, 11 a.m. – Brain Games with Doretha. Play various games, puzzles, and trivia challenges specifically designed to foster one’s brain health. Studies show that brain games may help sharpen certain thinking skills that tend to wane with age, such as boosting the brain’s processing speed, planning skills, reaction time, decision-making and short-term memory.

Jan. 26, 11 a.m. – “Which Way to Weight Management” by Family & Community Health Sciences Program Coordinator Jennifer Korneski, Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Stave off the typical weight gain that most encounter during the colder season. Take Control with Exercise – Mondays, 10 a.m. Strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility, and balance while boosting stamina in this gentle exercise program. Participants can practice exercises while either standing or sitting.

Nia Melt with Alida Westfield – Mondays, 11 a.m. Have an hour of fun every week while practicing this combination of healthy exercises Nia and Melt. Nia combines martial arts, modern dance, and yoga in a workout accompanied by music. MELT is a self-treatment technique that helps prevent pain, heals injury, and erases the negative effects of aging and active living. The class ends with standing or sitting while practicing 15-20 minutes of non-impact Nia movements performed to music, which was created especially for seniors to promote HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).

Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Intermediate Ukulele Lessons with Chris – Tuesdays, 11 a.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. Build on the skills learned in the beginner’s class to master chords, melodies and improvisation. Participants will also play a multi-part arrangement in a band and perform a wide range of musical genres.

(NEW) (Virtual) Geri-Fit with Quail Brook Senior and Trained Instructor Karen Jesse – Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11 a.m. Rebuild strength that has been lost through the aging process with Geri-Fit, an exercise program that supports a higher level of functioning in older adults. The program is practiced while seated in a chair and incorporates strength training, stretching and range-of-motion exercises, stability and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. This unique and beneficial evidence-based exercise program is facilitated for 45 minutes, two times per week, over 12 weeks for a total of 24 classes. **Standing is optional. The class size is limited to a minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 24. Participants need a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs. to begin), a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout.**

Jan. 3, 12:30 p.m. – “Native American Culture” by Educator Danielle Crigler, Museum of Early Trades & Crafts. Gain insightful knowledge about Native American culture and the ongoing struggles of modern Native American communities. This presentation will highlight the stories about Native American Culture and the struggles they endured, which were often buried in history books.
