5/30/2023 - Senior Wellness Centers Offer Exciting Programs in June

 

 

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Connect with others by registering for programs at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers. Join the fun, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services oversees the senior wellness centers, which provide a wide range of programs to help foster lifelong enrichment in a social and uplifting atmosphere.

Closing: There will be no in-person or hybrid classes or programs on June 29 (Staff In-Service/Professional Day).

Lunch
Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Monday through Friday for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.

Virtual and Hybrid Programs
Programs will be occurring in person and as hybrid and virtual. Participants can attend hybrid programs either in person with an instructor or via Zoom. Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule. A camera (audio and video) is required to participate in virtual health and wellness programs.

Zoom Tutorials

Bridge Club – Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Get intellectual and social stimulation when playing Bridge, a mentally challenging card game. Studies show when participants play Bridge regularly it can stimulate the brain to keep it alert and help one’s memory stay active. **New members and beginners are welcome. Chair Yoga with Jillian. Wednesdays & Fridays, 1 p.m. Gain health benefits by practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of your favorite chair. Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping participants gain an overall sense of well-being. **The cost of the class is $40 for the eight-week program. June 7, 11 a.m. – “Thunderstorm Preparedness” by Disaster Program Specialist Allie Calascibetta, American Red Cross. Learn how to prepare for thunderstorms and stay safe during these dangerous, powerful storms.

June 16 & 30 11 a.m. – Bingo. Partake in a little bit of friendly competition and play Bingo, which is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo provides multiple benefits, such as promoting socialization, strengthening hand-eye coordination, and improving concentration, listening, and short-term memory.

June 19, 11 a.m. – “Women of the Sea and Sky” by Historian Carol Simon-Levin. Enjoy Carol Simon-Levin’s portrayal of American female aviator Jerry Cobb who was part of Mercury 13. In this historical performance, Carol also tells the story of unknown women astronomers, marine scientists and astronauts who explored outer space and the ocean giving the world a greater understanding of the planet and universe.

June 20, 11 a.m. – “Uncovering the Enslaved” by Hannah Gaston, Liberty Hall Museum. Learn the history of slavery throughout the country and in New Jersey in recognition of Juneteenth, which celebrates hope, independence, and the end of slavery in the United States. Qigong Practices with Michael – Mondays, 10 a.m. Learn the traditional practice of Qigong, a sitting meditation that teaches participants to get acquainted with their minds, bodies, and spirits. Beginners will learn to coordinate their breathing techniques with movements and then practice sets of exercises (like Tai Chi) until each movement and posture is perfected.

(Hybrid) Gentle Aerobics with Lisa & Caitlin – Wednesdays & Fridays, 10:30 a.m. Exercise without putting undue pressure or strain on the body. Learn movements to increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize individual muscles. Gentle aerobics can help decrease the risk of falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day activities. **There will be no class on June 7. June 6 & 20, 11 a.m. – Bereavement Support Group. Share common feelings about grief and the renewal process in this support group, which provides participants with a safe place for grieving the death of a loved one. Interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts are

June 7, 10 a.m. – Public Hearing. The Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services and its Advisory Council will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater, 876 East Main Street about its programs and services for adults 60 years and above and their caregivers. The forum is an opportunity for the public to talk about community needs and recommended potential solutions.

The purpose of the hearing is to offer county residents the opportunity to comment about the needs of older adults, persons living with disabilities, and caregivers to learn about the 2024 Area Plan Contract Update, which provides services funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act, Supplemental Aging Supportive, SVCS, State Safe Housing and Transportation, Adult Protective Services, Casino Revenues, State, County and Local Funds.

The 2024 Area Plan Contract Update identifies trends and conditions affecting the aging population in Somerset County. Goals and implementing strategies to meet current needs will be discussed. Other topics include the services and programs to be provided under the Older Americans Act, along with the proposed spending plan.

June 22, 11 a.m. – Home Fire Safety by Disaster Program Specialist Allie Calascibetta, American Red Cross. Learn how to keep you and your home safe from fires.

June 23, 11 a.m. – The Swinging Singing Seniors. Swing into summer with this amazingly talented choral group comprised of local seniors who will perform songs, such as “Hello Seniors” sung to the tune of “Hello Dolly,” “Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da” and the “Lullaby on Broadway.”

June 26, 11 a.m. – Unused Medication Drop-Off Opportunity & K-9 Visit by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. Take advantage of this safe way to dispose of unused or expired medication. A Sheriff’s Officer will be at the senior center to collect the medication. The Sheriff’s K-9 officer will also bring their four-legged partner. **Senior center staff cannot accept unused medication without the Sheriff’s Officer present.**

June 27, 11 a.m. – Summer Celebration with Rob Trout. Get the party started right with performer Rob Trout who will sing your favorite dance hits!

June 30, 11 a.m. – Let’s Make Art Together. Create a three-part painting that has 3D embellishments. Beginner Ukulele Club with David – Wednesdays, 1 p.m. Start on the right note with easy-to-follow lessons. Nia combines martial arts, modern dance, and yoga in a workout accompanied by music. Participants practice 15-20 minutes of non-impact Nia movements performed to music while standing or sitting and then practice MELT, which is a self-treatment technique to help prevent pain, heal injury, and erase the negative effects of aging and active living. The class was created especially for seniors to help promote HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).

GERI-FIT Part 2 with Karen Jessie – Wednesdays & Fridays, 10 a.m. (May 3 – July 26). Rebuild strength in this class, which is specifically for older adults. Geri-Fit uses strength training with stretching and range-of-motion exercises, stability, and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. **This program is practiced while sitting, and standing is optional. Participants will need a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lb.), a sturdy chair, a stretch band and water to drink during the workout. Participants will also learn about home fire extinguishers as well as fire safety tips for protection and prevention.

June 26, 11 a.m. – Quail Brook Line Dance Performance at Spring Hills. Enjoy the new Quail Brook Senior Center dance troupe when they step up their talent with an inaugural performance at Spring Hills, which will delight the audience with songs and line dancing following step-by-step instructions so the audience can participate.

(Virtual) June 27, 11 a.m. – “Gentle Giants: Draft Horses” by Adria Strausbaugh. Take a virtual tour of a draft horse farm and get an overview of the life of a draft horse and its unique stories. Find out interesting information, such as how much the draft horse weighs (upwards of one ton), and the pre-industrial revolution history of the draft horse. Learn about Operation G.E.L.D., which makes gelding accessible and affordable for horse owners facing financial hardship and find out about the Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue Welfare Organization, which is committed to saving draft horses and draft cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.

June 28, 12:30 p.m. – “Queen Elizabeth II” by Alisa Dupuy, Ladies of History Historical Productions. Learn about the woman who reigned over the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth Realms for 70 years during WWII and decolonization. The Queen’s reign has been noted as the longest of the British monarch and any female head of state. Participants will also find out about the royal family lineage, honors, titles, and trials and tribulations.

Stretch & Strength with Warrenbrook Senior Center volunteers Kanwaljit Minhas and Emma (Connie) Deversterre – Mondays, 10:15 a.m. – Improve flexibility and balance with stretching, which keeps the muscles flexible, strong and healthy to help maintain a range of motion in the joints. **The class begins on June 12.**

Do You Want to Bingocize? With Warrenbrook Senior Center Participant and Trained Instructor Rashmi Desai. Mondays & Wednesdays, 12:45 p.m. (April 3 – June 13). Bingocize yourself and play this fun game with an educational twist that combines Bingo, exercise, health, and fall-prevention information. The sessions last approximately 45 to 60 minutes. This is a great way to get older adults moving and mingling. Some participants may win a prize. **The game should only be played only twice a week on nonconsecutive days.**

Zumba Gold with Judith –Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. Get your blood pumping with zesty music and a hearty workout. Build cardiovascular health by challenging your heart and exercising, the hip, leg, and arm muscles when performing fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair. ** Next session starts on June 6. Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays & Fridays, 1 – 3 p.m. Play Bridge, a mentally challenging card game that provides intellectual and social interaction. Regularly playing bridge can stimulate the brain to keep it alert and help it stay active. **New members and beginners are always welcome. Lessons are available.**

Take Control with Exercise – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Strengthen core muscles and improve flexibility, and balance while boosting stamina during this gentle exercise program. ** There is no fee for this class. Advanced Bridge – First & Third Wednesdays, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Project Healthy Bones – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture in this peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who are either at risk for osteoporosis or have it. **This class is currently full. Gentle Yoga with Jillian –Thursdays, 10 a.m. Practice Hatha yoga poses, while either sitting or standing, to increase bone density and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. The class is perfect for relieving stress, and it also helps achieve an overall sense of well-being. **The cost is $40 for the eight-week program. This class is appropriate for all skill levels. (NEW) Canasta – Thursdays, 1 – 3 p.m. Join fellow center members to play this fun and interesting game Canasta, which requires the use of tactics, strategic thinking and helps develop comradery.

Tai Chi with Roger – Fridays, 10 a.m. Reduce your risk of falls by practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies have shown that some participants experience a reduction in pain, fatigue and stiffness and have gained a greater sense of well-being. **This program can be practiced while either standing or sitting.**

June 1 & 15, 11 a.m. – Basic Computer and iPad Instruction with Parul. Learn basic computer and iPad skills, such as checking email, opening documents and attachments, clearing the cache and creating Word documents. June 2 & 16, 11 a.m. – Brain Games and Hand Bells with Adrienne Graubard. Solve puzzles and challenge your brain with mind-stretching activities such as word games and a fun-filled musical workout using hand bells.

June 5, 11 a.m. – “Healthy Aging” by Senior Education Director Brenda Miller, Community in Crisis. Learn valuable information about health and wellness, medication usage, stress management, depression, and substance use and misuse in this seven-week interactive wellness program for adults 60 years of age and older. In the seventh session, participants will find out about alternative ways to manage pain with yoga, chiropractic care, massage and more. **Attendance is required at all (or most) sessions.**

June 7 & 14, 11 a.m. – Laughter Wellness with Certified Laughter Wellness Instructor Roz Gerken. Learn all about laughter-wellness because “laughter is the best medicine.” In this class, participants will learn laughter techniques including awareness-breathing, and using fake laughter to reduce stress, encourage a positive outlook and feel more refreshed and energized.

June 8, 11 a.m. – “Armchair Travels: Italy” with Parul. Travel to the boot-shaped country, Italy, and never leave the comfort of your chair. In this info-game, participants will learn about Italian fashion, music, antiques, artifacts, and see amazing landscapes, volcanoes, opera and more when watching the video “Rome, the Eternal City.” Participants will also play trivia, complete a word search, and then take a fun quiz.

June 26, 11 a.m. – Benefits of Exercise and Mobility by Lauren Calado, P.T., D.P.T., Kessler Rehabilitation Center. Learn about the benefits of movement and how it positively impacts multiple body systems including mental health. Participants will also learn exercise options to help avoid pain and weakness, improve endurance; and find strategies for getting motivated and staying committed to an exercise routine.

June 28, 11 a.m. – Richard Stockton: Enigmatic Signer of the Declaration of Independence by Joseph Wroblewski. Learn about the life of Richard Stockton from Princeton, New Jersey who was one of the five signers of the Declaration of Independence and the only one who was arrested by the British.

June 30, 11 a.m. – Sing Along with Sal DiBianca. Join Sal as he performs a variety of popular songs along with some Independence Day songs.
