3/13/2024 - Somerset County-Operated Senior Wellness Centers Offer Exciting Activities in April
SOMERVILLE, NJ – Connect with others at any of the six Somerset County-operated senior wellness centers, which are managed by the County Office on Aging and Disability Services. Join the fun, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The senior wellness centers offer games, activities, and educational, health and wellness programs in a social and uplifting atmosphere.
Lunch
Attendees can invite a friend or neighbor to join them for lunch. All county-operated senior wellness centers provide a nutritionally balanced lunch on Mondays through Fridays for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 years and above. The menu includes a choice of hot meat-based or meatless entrées or cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunches. Senior wellness center clients must make reservations for lunch by 10 a.m. on the previous business day.
Virtual and/or Hybrid Program Guidelines
Hybrid and virtual programs are noted throughout the schedule. Participants can attend hybrid programs either in person with an instructor or via Zoom.
Participants can join Zoom programs through a web browser without downloading applications or software. A camera (audio and video) is required to participate in Zoom programs.

Geri-Fit with Connie Ledder – Mondays & Wednesdays, 10 a.m. (April 29 – July 22). Rebuild strength that’s been lost through the aging process and achieve a higher level of functioning. This class combines strength training with stretching and range of motion exercises, stability, and balance training for fall prevention, cardiovascular activity for heart health, and gait exercises to help improve walking. This unique and beneficial 45-minute exercise program is facilitated two times per week, for 12 weeks (24 classes). ** Preregistration is required. Participants can practice Geri-Fit when seated or standing. This class requires a set of light dumbbell weights (2 lbs. to start), a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. Mahjong Club – Mondays & Wednesdays, 12:30 – 4 p.m. Learn to play Mahjong, an interesting game that helps keep the brain sharp and supercharged! This club is for anyone who loves the game and wants to meet new people and have fun. **This is not a competitive club. All levels of experience are welcome.**

Bridge Club – Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Get intellectual and social stimulation when playing this mentally challenging card game. Studies show playing Bridge regularly can stimulate the brain to keep it alert and help one’s memory stay active. **New members and beginners are welcome.**
Chair Yoga with Jillian –Wednesdays, 1 p.m., (March 27 – May 15), & Fridays, 1 p.m. (March 29 – May 17). Gain health benefits by practicing yoga poses with the support and safety of a favorite chair. Increase bone density, and improve strength, flexibility, and balance while immersed in a relaxing class. Expect a lot of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and helping participants achieve an overall sense of well-being. **The cost is $40 for the eight-week program. April 2, 11 a.m. – “Eating for Cancer Prevention” with Cecilia Gomez, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Learn how healthy eating may help prevent cancer and find out how various foods may increase or decrease the risk of cancer, as well as what lifestyle habits can improve one’s overall health.
April 3, 11 a.m. – April-Themed Trivia with Roberto. Play this fun-fact trivia game of pop culture, science, geography, and historic events that happened in April.
April 4, 11 a.m. – “Make Time for Your Mammogram” with Daisy Pelaez-Diaz from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset. Learn about the importance of getting an annual mammogram for early breast cancer detection in this engaging educational webinar. **Participants will receive educational giveaways.**
April 5 & 22, 11 a.m. – Table Games. Join fellow game lovers to play Po-Ke-No, Left-Center-Right Dice Game, Scrabble, Dominoes, and other games to have fun. **Volunteers will teach participants how to play.**
April 8, 11 a.m. – Juggling Performance with Ryan Ozolins. Enjoy this unique performance that weaves together juggling, music, and the magic of improvisation to spark laughter and rekindle dreams. Expect an interactive hour where everyday stories turn into extraordinary adventures with the audience becoming an essential part of the performance. April 24, 11 a.m. – “Jump Start Your Garden Indoors” with Rutgers Master Gardeners. Learn how to jump-start an indoor garden and find out about the benefits of indoor seed starting. Participants will also learn what materials are needed, how to select seeds and when to plant seeds, how to manage seedling growth, and what to do before transitioning young plants from indoor to outdoor gardens.
April 25, 11 a.m. – Volunteer Appreciation Day with Christopher Doughty. In honor of the senior wellness center volunteers, Chris Doughty will give a wonderful instrumental and vocal performance. His rustic baritone voice will accompany music while he is playing classic guitar, jazz banjo, and piano arrangements of hit songs as he serenades the volunteers so everyone can sing along.

Create beautiful, personalized spring photo collages by using pictures from magazines that evoke personal meaning and/or copies of pictures from home. Project Healthy Bones – Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Next session: April 1 to Sept. 23. Improve balance, strength, flexibility, and posture in this peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program for individuals who either have or are at risk for osteoporosis. **The current sessions are full. April 1, 11 a.m. – “Living with Low Vision” presented by Elsa Zavoda, Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey. Learn about low vision and how it can impact a person’s ability to function. The presentation will also include information about simple, inexpensive adaptive devices and the strategies available to help people with low vision function more independently in their homes as well as tips for home safety and fall prevention.

April 16, 11 a.m. – “Proton Therapy” with Clinical Educator Jerry Rymar, ProCure Proton Therapy Center. Get an overview of proton therapy, which is an advanced form of radiation cancer treatment that can help prostate, breast, and lung cancers. In this informative class, participants will learn about the science and clinical benefits of proton therapy.

April 17, 11 a.m. – Drumming in Spring with Dave Miller, EarthMovers Drum Collective. Learn how to hold a drum and make different tones while soothing the mind, body, and spirit. This class will offer a holistic drumming experience that will incite self-expression and a sense of joy. Drumming has been used as an ancient method for healing that has withstood the test of time by providing participants with health benefits, such as deep relaxation, lower blood pressure, stress reduction, and socialization.

Judgment Card Game – Mondays – Fridays, 1 p.m. Play this fun card game to challenge one’s cognitive abilities. This game is a crowd-pleaser at the center.
Rummikub – Mondays, & Fridays, 9:30 a.m. Play this fast-moving board game, which requires a little bit of luck and the use of one’s strategic thinking skills. Playing Rummikub promotes social interaction, mental stimulation, and relaxation. Time flies when participants play this game. **There is no program on April 3.**
Sit & Stitch Club – Mondays, 1 p.m. Bring knitting, crocheting, and sewing projects to this club, and share your skills and talents with other members. **Beginners are welcome.**
Fit & Flex with Rose – Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 11 a.m. Get fit while performing 20 minutes of low-impact exercise to music, use weights for 15 minutes, and then use resistance bands for 15 minutes. April 4, 11 a.m. – Casino Day with Caitlyn Campbell, Foothill Acres. Take part in the excitement of playing a slot machine, the challenge of poker, and the thrill of roulette. At this event, participants will get a Las Vegas experience without going to a casino.
April 4, 18, 10 a.m. – Simply Seated with Curtis Adams. Gain strength, energy, and a positive mood by practicing chair exercises during this video presentation.

Nia Melt with Alida Westfield – Mondays, 11 a.m. Eliminate pain and stress that’s “stuck” in the body by releasing it from the joints where it is trapped. In this structured class that was designed specifically for seniors, participants will perform Nia exercises that combine movement, mindfulness, and connection and MELT exercises that involve a lightweight series of full-body exercises. Participants will stand or sit while practicing 15-20 minutes of non-impact Nia movements that will stimulate HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) a practice known to burn fat, and they will also perform MELT exercises.
Tai Chi with Herb – Wednesdays, 10 a.m. Reduce the risk of falls by practicing Tai Chi. In this class, participants will focus on shifting their body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Studies show that participants reduce their pain, fatigue, and stiffness and achieve a greater sense of well-being when practicing Tai Chi. **Participants can practice these exercises while either standing or sitting.**

Line Dancing with Debbie Bjornsted – Thursdays, 11 a.m. Line Dancing is so much fun that it doesn’t even seem like exercise. You don’t need a partner and dancing is an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. It’s suitable for participants with limited mobility and has been shown to increase cardiovascular and muscular strength and improve coordination and balance as you work through the different moves. **All levels of skill are welcome. Join fellow book club members to discuss the book of the month and select the next book to read. **This book club is only for Warrenbrook Senior Wellness Center participants. April 10, 11 a.m. – “Gotcha! Avoiding Scams” with Terry, Anton Expert Handwriting. Prevent scammers from taking your money and valuables and find out how they scam through in-person visits, phone calls, the post office, and technology. In this session, participants will also learn how to identify scammers and their methods to keep them safe from con artists.
(Virtual) April 11, 11 a.m.– Breathing Techniques for Mental Wellness Meditation by Dr. Prabha Srinivas. Learn useful techniques to distract the mind and induce calm during an episode of anxiety. These techniques can be practiced regularly to calm and regulate the nervous system and help to identify situations that may trigger anxiety.
April 12, 11 a.m. – Around the World On A Paper Plane Craft. Celebrate the International Day of Human Space Flight and make a paper plane, participate in a paper plane flying competition.
April 12, 1 p.m. – Space Trivia. Take an astronomy quiz for fun.
April 15, 11 a.m. – Ageless Grace Fitness Program with Certified Ageless Grace Educator. Activate all five functions of the brain when participating in this program, including strategic planning, memory, recall, analytical thinking, creativity, imagination, and kinesthetic thinking. Ageless Grace is based on the cutting-edge science of neuroplasticity, which means it will help the brain and central nervous system change functionally and structurally for better health. **Participants of all skill levels will be thoroughly engaged in the class while seated in a chair.**
April 15 and 29, 1 p.m. – Drum Circle with Anil Sachdeva. Soothe the mind, body, and spirit in this drumming circle. This is a holistic experience that leaves participants feeling a sense of joy! This ancient approach to healing incites self-expression, and deep relaxation, as well as lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and opens communication. Anil will teach participants how to hold a drum and make different tones.
April 17, 11 a.m. – “Let’s Go Nuts” with Jennifer Korneski, M.P.H., Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Somerset County. Learn all about the health benefits of nuts, little powerhouses that pack a lot of protein in one punch and find out how to incorporate this plant-based protein into a healthy diet.
April 18, 11 a.m. – “Plants: Earth’s Silent Rulers.” Celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day by watching “Plants: Earth’s Silent Rulers,” a fascinating video that will unravel the mysteries of plants – one of the oldest forms of life on Earth. Learn how plants have evolved by adopting aggressive strategies for survival. Find out why these “quiet rulers” are the foundation of the global ecology, and the spring from which all life flows.
April 18, 1 p.m. – Tree Trivia. Test your knowledge by taking an “All About Trees” and “Trees of the World” quiz for fun.
April 19 & 26 – 11 a.m. Brain Games and Handbells with Adrienne Graubard. Solve puzzles and use handbells to stimulate the brain and enhance creative and critical thinking in this mind-tingling, brain-stumping, and fun-filled musical workout.
April 22, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Bob. Join senior wellness center volunteer, Bob, to play a rousing game of Bingo, which is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.

April 25, 11 a.m. – Volunteer Appreciation Event with Kenneth Kuehl. Celebrate the senior wellness center volunteers on this special occasion when they will be acknowledged for their selfless efforts through gratitude speeches, certificates of appreciation, and a musical performance. This is a great time to personally thank a volunteer.
April 26, 11 a.m. – Mini Gardening with Hirey Molligoda, Assisting Hands Home Care. Take part in a delightful indoor gardening activity. First decorate eggshells using markers, googly eyes, and hair (colored wool). Then add soil and plant seeds in the eggshells. **All supplies will be provided. Preregistration is required. April 29, 11 a.m. – Hearing Screenings with Tracy Walker, Hearing Life. Get a free 15-minute hearing screening, which is recommended for everyone over the age of 60 years. Even with good hearing, participants can use their screenings as a baseline if they experience hearing loss in the future. **Preregistration required.
