Announce February Activities
The senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services announce the February program schedule. All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.
All centers will be closed on Presidents Day, Feb. 18.
All Somerset County-operated senior centers offer a nutritionally balanced lunch, Monday through Friday, for a suggested donation of $2.50 for anyone age 60 and above. Menu choices include a hot meat-based or meatless entrée or a cold meat-based or meatless boxed lunch. Please make reservations prior to 10 a.m. on the previous business day.
Invite a friend or neighbor to join you for lunch! Come earlier in the day and enjoy one of the center’s many programs!
If you drive or have your own ride, you can go to any center of your choice.

Bridge Club – Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain to keep it alert, and it helps your memory stay active. Take Control with Exercise – Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. & Thursday, 10:30 a.m. This is an ongoing exercise program for all levels of skill and ability and can be performed while either standing or sitting. Monthly Book Club – Every Third Thursday, 12:30 p.m. On Feb. 21, join us for a discussion of the current book “The Other Einstein” by Marie Benedict, then select the next book to read. New members are always welcome!
Dancercise – Monday, 10:30 a.m. Here’s an innovative and fun way to exercise! This low-impact aerobics class is great for the heart! Dance to popular music that will keep you moving. Start with a warm up to help you avoid injury; then dance to the beat of the music and finish with a cool-down. Yoga With Denise –This class is open to all skill levels, and can be practiced while either standing or sitting. Performing hatha yoga poses helps increase bone density, and improves strength, balance and flexibility while participants are being immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. Tai Chi for Health (Beginners) – Wednesday, 1 p.m. This beginner’s class teaches the core of tai chi and is designed to help participants improve their strength, balance and flexibility. Participants will learn new vocabulary, different ways of moving, and develop postures that will help them master the more advanced forms of tai chi. The basic form of this art will help enable participants to experience considerable improvement in their physical ability. **Suggested donation of $16 for the eight-week program; the next session begins March 6. Zumba Gold – Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin dance-inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for people age 60 and above, beginners or others needing modifications to their exercise routine. This fun exercise builds cardiovascular health with dance moves that challenge the heart and work the hips, leg and arm muscles. Sneakers are required. **Cost is $40 for the eight-week program. Feb. 1 – Winter Mandala Art Workshop, 10:30 a.m. What’s a mandala? Mandalas are created with intricate geometric patterns that are thought to represent the universe. As an art form, they are exquisitely beautiful, especially when color is added. For this class, no art experience is necessary.
Feb. 4 – Chinese New Year Celebration with Chieh Sheu, 10:30 a.m. Join Cheih as she discusses 2019: Year of the Pig. Chinese New Year, also known as the “Spring Festival” in modern Mainland China, is one of the most important traditional festivals and is celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar (Gregorian and lunar-solar calendars). According to the Chinese zodiac, the sign of the pig occupies the last position in the Chinese zodiac and symbolizes such character traits as diligence, compassion and generosity. Join us for another New Year celebration and learn about your own unique personality traits.
Feb. 5 – “Men & Women in Space” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 a.m. Helen leads this discussion on the successful men and women who have ventured into space since landing on the moon.
Feb. 5 – FREE Blood Pressure Screenings by the Somerset Hills Visiting Nurse Association, 10:30 a.m. A registered nurse will be onsite to give individual blood pressure screenings. No appointment is necessary.
Feb. 6 & 20 – Country Western Dancing with Vince & Diana, 10:30 a.m. Learn line and partner dances to popular and classic country music. Vince and Diana will adjust the teaching to the participants’ level. Whether it’s a mix of beginners and experienced dancers and/or partners or singles –
everyone is welcome!
Feb. 8 – “Keeping Up the Beat” by Caitlin Witucki, MS, health promotion specialist, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn how high cholesterol and high blood pressure can cause heart disease, the definition and difference between HDL and LDL, be able to identify lifestyle changes that will encourage heart health and learn why practicing heart-disease prevention and a healthier heart are imperative.
Feb. 11 & 26 – Bingo, 10:30 a.m. Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers have found that playing Bingo has multiple health benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, which improves listening and short-term memory skills.
Feb. 12 – Valentine’s Day Celebration, 10:30 a.m. Join Clifford Seay as he sings your favorite songs in honor of Valentine’s Day.
Feb. 13 – “Songs, Tales & History” by Gordon Thomas Ward, 10:30 a.m. This brand new multimedia show is filled with songs, photos, stories, adventure, history and tales of ghostly encounters that will be presented by Gordon. Come enjoy this accomplished local singer-songwriter, author, podcast host, historian and paranormal researcher.
Feb. 15 – Craft: Valentine’s for the Birds, 10:30 a.m. Show the birds some love by creating an edible valentine bird feeder. This craft is easy and fun! Please call to reserve a seat.

Feb. 19 – Total Brain Workout with Kristen, 10:30 a.m. Did you know that solving puzzles and challenging yourself with new, mind-stretching exercises could stimulate the brain and enhance your critical thinking processes? Join us for some mind-tingling brain stumpers and a fun-filled intellectual workout.
Feb. 22 – Berry Bruschetta Demonstration & Tasting, 10:30 a.m. This is a different spin on the traditional tomato bruschetta, as the chef will use various fruits and soft cheese.
Feb. 25 – “Heart Healthy Foods” by Cheryl Komline, registered dietitian, Bernards Township Health Department, 10:30 a.m. Cheryl will present tasty foods that are heart healthy.
Feb. 27 – “Songs of the 1960s & 70s” by Andrew Lobby, 10:30 a.m. Andrew plays the guitar and will sing your favorites.

Carrom – Available Monday – Friday. Strike and Pocket table game is of Eastern origin and is similar to billiards and table shuffleboard.
Games/Cards (Scrabble, Uno, Canasta, Cribbage, etc.) – Available Monday – Friday. If you have a favorite game that is not listed that you would like to play, and/or if you are interested in starting a club featuring your favorite game, please inform the staff.
Ping-Pong – Monday – Friday. Ping-pong (table tennis) has only been an Olympic sport since 1988. Go ahead and take a shot at this fun game. Play either singles or a doubles game. It’s a great way to improve hand/eye coordination, concentration and agility. **Call for availability**
Table Shuffleboard/Air Hockey – Available Monday – Friday. **Call for availability.**
Qigong Practices With Michael – Monday, 10 a.m. Michael will teach the traditional practice of Qigong (a standing/sitting meditation that focuses on being acquainted with the mind, body, and spirit). Beginners will learn breathing techniques that are coordinated with physical movements while practicing sets of exercise (similar to tai chi) until each movement or posture is perfected.
Gentle Aerobics – Monday & Thursday, 10:30 a.m. Exercise and move without putting undue pressure or strain on your body. Learn movements that will increase blood circulation, lubricate joints for flexibility, and strengthen and stabilize muscles. These exercises may help to decrease falls and make it easier to accomplish day-to-day physical activities. The program can be practiced while either sitting or standing.
Mahjong Lessons – Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. Have you always wanted to learn how to play mahjong, or are you familiar with the game but need other players? Join Sylvia and fellow center-members to learn this interesting game. Experienced players can come to the center on Thursdays from 12:30 – 3 p.m. to play.
Needlework Crafts Club – Tuesday, 1 p.m. All are welcome to join. Bring your own crocheting/crafting project or come learn something new and meet wonderful friends while practicing your favorite hobby. **Call (908) 203-6101 for more information.**
Hatha Yoga – Hatha Yoga incorporates body postures, controlled breathing, and meditation. Practicing Hatha Yoga has many benefits including stretching and aligning the body, improved balance and flexibility, and a more supple spine and better circulation. Please bring a mat; some mats are available on a first-come, first serve basis. Space is limited. **Check the monthly calendar for a schedule.**

Scrabble Club – Wednesday, 1 p.m. Enjoy a friendly game of Scrabble. If there is sufficient interest, we may plan for center members to compete with other area Scrabble clubs.

Healthy Bones Exercise Class – Wednesday, 10 a.m. This peer-led, 24-week exercise and education program is for individuals who either are at risk for osteoporosis or have it. Exercises focus on improving balance, strength, flexibility, and posture. Advanced registration is required. A doctor’s note is also required prior to the first class and then once every year. **Class is full, and there are no available openings. Book Club – Fourth Thursday of the Month, 10 a.m. New members are welcome. Join us to discuss the current book “Winter Garden” by Kristen Hannah.
Exercise with Sabina – Friday, 10:45 a.m. Aerobic chair exercises provide many health benefits, such as improving heart health; reducing stress; lowering the risk of depression; reducing the risk of diabetes and osteoporosis; increasing body stamina; improving metabolism, flexibility and stamina.
Social Dancing – Friday, 11 a.m. This is a peer-led social dancing class. Social dancing is not only great exercise but is an opportunity to make friends in a positive and fun environment.

Feb. 12, 19 & 26 – Conversational English with Sally Rob, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County, 10:45 a.m. The mission of the Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County (LVSC) is to promote literacy throughout the community. LVSC provides student-centered tutoring and literacy programs for adults, so that they may function more effectively in their daily lives.

Feb. 7 – “A New Year, A New Me: How to Prevent Injuries While Reaching Your Weight Loss Goal” by Mike Evangelist, MS, PT, vice president, clinical services, JAG-ONE Physical Therapy. We love seeing a renewed effort to get healthy around the New Year. However, starting a new workout often can lead to injury, which of course means you can’t work out. Instead of slipping into this cycle, our professionals will give you tips for getting back into shape slowly and safely, so that your progress can be sustained for the long haul.
Feb. 11 – The Jeopardy Challenge by Jennifer Furman, director of community relations, Avalon Assisted Living. Jennifer will be onsite to present her version of the game Jeopardy.
Feb. 12 & 26 – Bereavement Support Group, 10 a.m. Grieving the death of a loved one is a universal experience in our lives. The purpose of this support group is to provide participants with a safe place to share common feelings about their grief and renewal process with others. The group incorporates interfaith bereavement principles and universal spiritual concepts. Ronald W. Kaplan, doctor of ministry, grief counselor, and pastoral psychotherapist will facilitate discussions. We welcome your presence and participation!
Feb. 12 – Craft: Creating Valentine’s Day Cards, 10:45 a.m. Join us as we create unique Valentine’s Day cards for friends and loved ones. **All supplies are included.**
Feb. 13 – Life Line Screening, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Somerset County Senior Wellness Center at Bridgewater is pleased to offer a preventative health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventative health screenings, will host affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings. Five screenings will be offered to scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, which are the leading cause of strokes; abdominal aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat, which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package that includes four vascular tests and an osteoporosis screening for $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. **There are three ways to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount of any package priced above $129. Feb. 14 – Love is All Around performance by Gordon James, trumpeter & vocalist, 10:45 a.m. This will be a performance that captures the magic and romance of Valentine’s Day. Songs performed will be from different decades.

Feb. 20 – Craft: Bird Feeders. Let’s do what we can to help our furry-feathered friends during the cold winter months. You will have an opportunity to make a bird feeder to bring home. **All supplies will be provided.**
Feb. 21 – “Armchair Travelers Presents Morocco” by Dorothy & Irwin Vogel. Dorothy and Irwin Vogel started traveling the world 25 years ago after they retired. Together they have visited 89 countries! In each country, they have collected artifacts, have taken extensive photographs and recorded all of this on a DVD that is complete with music and a narration of their experiences.
Feb. 26 – “Songs of the 1960s & 70s” by Andrew Lobby, 10:30 a.m. Andrew plays the guitar and sings your favorite songs.
Feb. 27 – “Winter Weather Preparation” by Randi Goldberg, director of community relations, Always Best Care Senior Services, 10:45 a.m. Randi will show us how to prepare for the upcoming winter weather or any other emergency. Know the important documents and supplies to gather and be prepared in any emergency.
Feb. 28 – “Unused Medication Drop-Off Opportunity & K-9 Visit” by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. A Sheriff’s Officer will be here at the center to collect any unused or expired medications. Please take advantage of this safe way to dispose of your medication. The center’s staff cannot accept unused medications without the Sheriff Officer present. The Sheriff’s K-9 unit will also pay us a special visit.

Jigsaw Puzzles – Available Monday – Friday. Strike up a conversation, make new friends and enjoy assembling puzzles together. We have a large variety of puzzles for participants from which to choose.
Fit & Flex with Rose – Tuesday & Thursday, 10:45 a.m. This FREE weekly exercise program changes frequently and is suitable for all skill levels. This class will practice stretching, strength-training, laughter-yoga, breathing exercises and more. **Check the monthly calendar for schedule updates.**

Tai Chi Chih with Janet O. – Wednesday, 9:15 a.m. In Tai Chi Chih, participants will practice a series of gentle, fluid movements and one pose that will activate, circulate and balance the chi (the intrinsic energy of the body). Learn this practice at any age, ability or condition. This can be performed while either standing or sitting. **Cost is $40 for the eight-week program; the next session begins March 20. Feb. 1 – “What’s Next for Human Space Travel?” by Paul Cirillo, 10 a.m. Learn about the latest discoveries in our solar system and beyond! See breathtaking pictures of all the planets, including Pluto and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Get a real feel for our place in the universe. Discover what we have learned about planets around other stars and the search for another earth. Paul is a member of the New Jersey Astronomical Association and former leader for the Somerset County 4-H Space and Astronomy Club.

Feb. 4 – Craft: Creating Fluffy Heart Pillows with Tammy, 10:45 a.m. A no-sew heart pillow is a great thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift. You can create a pillow cover by cutting slits into the fabric and tying two pieces of fleece together. Once you know the basics of making a no-sew fleece pillow, you can experiment with different shapes such as circles, squares or even larger projects like a blanket. **All supplies will be provided.**
Feb. 5, 12, 19 & 26 – Card Games, 10 a.m. Join us as we learn how to play an exciting game of Cards Down and 3 in 1. Playing different card games will sharpen participants’ cognitive ability and strengthen socialization.
Feb. 6, 13, 20 & 27 – Art Class with Nadeen, 10:30 a.m. Join Nadeen as she teaches us how to paint winter themed landscape paintings with watercolor. She will show us the necessary tools and techniques for watercolor painting. **All supplies will be provided.**
Feb. 8 – “Enviroscape” by Von Scully, watershed ambassador, Americorp, New Jersey Water Supply Authority, 10:45 a.m. Learn about what constitutes a watershed through this interactive display model of how water flows from various topographical points while increasing the amounts of ever-present pollutants.
Feb. 11 – “Medicare and Medications Made Affordable” by Laurie Roome, community educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. Are you finding it difficult to pay for your prescriptions, healthcare insurance, premiums and co-pays? If so, this presentation is for you! Learn the basics of Medicare and how you can get the most out of your Medicare dollars. Discover the best options for you and if you will be eligible for any cost saving.
Feb. 15 – The Week in Review, 10 a.m. Join us while we recap the latest news headlines of the week and discuss articles of interest. Bring an exciting event to share, or give your opinion in this lively weekly discussion of local and national events.
Feb. 15 – Valentine’s Celebration with “Many Faces of Love” Presentation by Gordon Thomas Ward, 10:45 a.m. Gordon will present original songs and stories about the love of many things, including people, places, countries and more.

Feb. 25 – “Advanced Care Planning” by Adalin Ball, eldercare educator, Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, 10:30 a.m. One barrier for helping a loved one plan for the future is not knowing how to discuss difficult topics. Advance Care Planning will help you when it is time to plan and discuss future health care and end of life care with your loved one. You will learn the best way to allow your loved one to have a voice about their choices and wishes when they are incapable of making that decision for themselves.

Tai Chi with Herb – Wednesday, 11 a.m. Tai Chi participants will focus on shifting body weight through a series of light, controlled movements that flow rhythmically into one long gesture. Feb. 1 – NIA/MELT Exercise Class with Alida Weisfeld, Advanced MELT Instructor, 10:15 a.m. This class uses a hybrid of non-impact aerobics (NIA) and MELT techniques. NIA incorporates music while participants practice gentle movements, and MELT has participants use exercise balls and resistance bands for the hands and feet to help eliminate stress and pain from the body. NIA and MELT have been shown to increase balance, agility and mobility by releasing the “stuck” stress in joints.
Feb. 2, 15 & 22 – Ageless Grace Fitness Program with Roz Gerken, certified ageless grace educator, 10:30 a.m. Ageless Grace is based on the cutting-edge science of neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain and central nervous system to change structurally and functionally. By merging aspects of hatha and chair yoga; gestural; improvisational and world dance forms; sound therapy and creative play; together with guided relaxation and meditation techniques, the class will promote calm, control, and meditative practices with imaginative, joyful and social interaction. Line Dancing – Friday, 9:30 a.m. Line Dancing is so much fun that it doesn’t even seem like exercise! You don’t need a partner; and dancing is an easy way to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. It’s suitable for participants with limited mobility, and has been shown to increase cardiovascular and muscular strength, and improve coordination and balance as you work through different moves.

Feb. 4 – “Chinese Language Lesson Four” with Lillian Liuling, Quail Brook Senior Center volunteer, 10:30 a.m. Learn what key components form the beautiful Chinese language; pinyin, tones and characters/symbols with pronunciation. The goal at the end of the series is to be able to pronounce (and write) everyday pleasantries, numerals and simple phrases.

Acupuncture is a component of the health care system in China and practiced for more than 2,500 years. Based upon the belief that our bodies are comprised of balanced patterns of energy flow (Qi) that is essential for health. Join Dr. Perry Wolk-Weiss, chiropractor, when he discusses how to prevent and manage back or neck pain for those who are 60 plus. Learn about this FREE service intended to provide police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) access to a residence if there is an emergency and the resident is unable to open the door. Feb. 22 – “Understanding Dementia” by Monica Townsend, training coordinator, Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, Behavioral Research and Training Institute, COPSA Institute for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders, 10:30 a.m. Dementia is more than just “forgetfulness.” This discussion will discuss dementia and ways for caregivers to address the challenges of this condition. This session will help shed light for people, family members and caregivers by providing information that will help them be better able to respond effectively throughout the progression of the disease by a creating positive approach and give information about how to handle behavior changes.
Feb. 25 – “Heart Health & Everything Chocolate” by Aliz Holzmann, RD, CSSD, CDE, ShopRite/Wakefern, 10:30 a.m. Healthy chocolate (dark vs. milk) sounds like a dream come true for anyone concerned about their health. Reports and statistics show chocolate’s main ingredient, cocoa, appears to reduce risk factors for heart disease and may help lower blood pressure and improve vascular function. Feb. 4 – “New York Skyscrapers” by Kevin Woyce, 10:30 a.m. Using original photographs and historic images, Kevin Woyce tells the story of New York’s greatest skyscrapers, from the 1890 New York World building to the Woolworth, Chrysler and Empire State buildings. He will explain how and why they were built and introduce the architects and businessmen whose visions shaped the world-famous skyline.

Feb. 11 – “Watch Out! Scams and Seniors” by Christopher Medina, Seton Hall Law School, 10:30 a.m. As part of the school’s Investor Advocacy Project, this presentation will highlight the latest scams that are targeting the senior population. The presenters will walk through several scenarios and offer suggestions about what to do if you encounter a scam. There will be an open discussion after the presentation allowing attendees to ask questions and share their experiences.
Feb. 12 – Warrenbrook Book Club, Second Tuesday of the Month, 1:30 p.m. The featured book to be discussed is “In the Garden of the Beasts” by Erik Larson. New members are welcome!
Feb. 15 & 22 – Mind Your Mind Brain and Trivia Workout, 10:30 a.m. Just as you do physical exercise to tone up the muscles throughout your body, playing word games and puzzles will stimulate different parts of your brain. As a group, we will play several “mind-stimulating” exercise workouts.
Feb. 18 – Center is closed.
Feb. 19 – News and Views with Gwen, 10:30 a.m. This class will feature interactive discussions that will focus on current events. Attendees are encouraged to bring their topic discussion ideas.
Feb. 22 – State Health Insurance Program (SHIP). A counselor will be available to provide FREE help to New Jersey Medicare beneficiaries who have problems or questions about their health benefits. SHIP is a statewide program by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. **Services are available by advanced appointment only and will be available the last Friday of the month. Feb. 25 – Family “Team” Feud with Gwen, 10:30 a.m. Enjoy playing a team version of the popular television game show where answers to survey questions are based on popular responses.
Feb. 26 – Who or What Mystery Trivia with Gwen, 10:30 a.m. What am I? Who am I? Together we will hear a variety of clues that will help us solve the mystery.
