Unregistered eligible voters encouraged to visit SCLSNJ September 22 to register

Staff and volunteers on hand to help on National Voter Registration Day; voter registration forms available year round at SCLSNJ library branches

(Somerset County, NJ: September 16, 2015) Tuesday, September 22 is National Voter Registration Day and Somerset County Library System of New Jersey is encouraging eligible county residents to visit any of the 10 SCLSNJ library branches located in Bridgewater, Bound Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, North Plainfield, Peapack & Gladstone, Rocky Hill at Mary Jacobs Memorial Library, Somerville, Warren Township and Watchung to register.

“In 2008, 6 million eligible voters didn’t vote because they either didn’t know how to register or they missed the registration deadline,” said Selwa Shamy, SCLSNJ’s support services manager. “SCLSNJ will have adult reference staff and volunteers available to answer questions and make sure the paperwork is completed and postmarked by the October 13 deadline for the November election. We're here to help."

SCLSNJ will have paper voter registration forms available in both English and Spanish. No postage will be necessary.

Voter registration forms are always available at the 10 branches of SCLSNJ and can also be downloaded here: http://www.co.somerset.nj.us/elections/forms.htm.

According to the State of New Jersey Department of State, to register in New Jersey you must be:

  • A United States citizen;
  • At least 18 years old by the next election;
  • A resident of the county for 30 days before the election; and
  • NOT currently serving a sentence, probation or parole because of a felony conviction.

The registration deadline to vote at the next election is 21 days prior to election day. For more information about voting in New Jersey, visit http://www.state.nj.us/state/elections/voting-information.html.
